In real life, Poe and Virginia had a cat named Catterina. She must have been a real cutie-pie!!!  Still, it has always been assumed that Poe's cat was black although some now believe that she was a tortoise shell kitty!

Whatever the case, she might not have looked like this one scooting along, but Poe would have most certainly approved!

Pluto - this was the cat's name - was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me throught the streets. (excerpt from The Black Cat)
